Jr. Qiu et K. Hirao, INFLUENCE OF A GLASS MATRIX ON THE FARADAY-EFFECT IN EU2-CONTAINING GLASSES(), Nippon Seramikkusu Kyokai gakujutsu ronbunshi, 106(3), 1998, pp. 290-293
Faraday effect and absorption spectrum measurements have been performe
d at room temperature for fluoroaluminate, berate and Ga2S3-based glas
s samples containing 5 cat%Eu2+. The Verdet constant (V-c) of fluoroal
uminate and berate glasses containing 5 cat%Eu2+ was negative, and the
absolute value of V-c decreased with increasing wavelength. In contra
st, the V-c of Ga2S3-based glass containing 5 cat%Eu2+ was negative in
the short wavelength region, while it became positive in wavelength r
egions longer than 635 nm. The effective transition wavelength, lambda
(t), of glasses containing Eu2+ has been calculated based on the Van V
leck and Hebb theory. The influence of a glass matrix on the Faraday e
ffect in Eu2+-containing glasses was discussed.
