Abstract
A sufficient condition is derived for the nonlinear instability of a r otating body with a fluid-filled cavity. This condition is given in te rms of quantities completely determined by the shape of the body/cavit y and the relative density of the fluid and the body. It is shown, for example, that such a system with a prolate ellipsoidal cavity of appr opriate ellipticity is nonlinearly unstable.
