A new approach for the electrosynthesis of indium sulfide films is des
cribed. This approach uses a sulfur-modified gold substrate, and relie
s on the underpotential deposition of indium on it to form an indium s
ulfide alloy. Combined cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical quartz c
rystal microgravimetry scans demonstrate the veracity of this film gro
wth approach. Photoelectrochemical measurements in a polysulfide redox
medium show that the In2S3 layers thus grown are photoactive and beha
ve as an n-type semiconductor. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All righ
