S. Lupia et W. Ochs, HADRON MULTIPLICITY AS THE LIMIT OF JET MULTIPLICITY AT HIGH-RESOLUTION, Nuclear physics. B, Proceedings supplement, 64, 1998, pp. 74-77
Recently exact numerical results from the evolution equation for parto
n multiplicities in QCD jets have been obtained. A comparison with var
ious approximate results is presented. A good description is obtained
not only of the jet multiplicities measured at LEP-1 but also of the h
adron multiplicities for ems energies above 1.6 GeV in e(+)e(-) annihi
lation. The solution suggests that a final state hadron can be represe
nted by a jet in the limit of small (nonperturbative) k(perpendicular
to) cut-off Q(0). In this description using as adjustable parameters o
nly the QCD scale Lambda and the cut-off Q(0), the coupling alpha(s) c
an be seen to rise towards large values above unity at low energies.
