Mixed suspensions exhibit heterocoagulation and therefore their pH ran
ge of stability is different from that of single powder suspensions. T
he effect of electrical double layer forces on the stability of single
and mixed suspensions of alumina and zirconia was experimentally asse
ssed by settling studies on dilute suspensions and rheological studies
on concentrated suspensions. The stability of single and mixed suspen
sions was modelled in terms of the stability ratio (W) and the predict
ed pH range of stability were found to be in reasonable agreement with
the experimental data. The behaviour of concentrated suspensions (up
to 30 vol.%) was similar to that of 0.1 wt.% dilute suspensions. (C) 1
