A new extruded scintillator made of a technical-grade commercial polys
tyrene (PS) is described. The light yield of the new device is compara
ble with that of a scintillator obtained by way of PS polymerization a
nd is virtually independent of the particular method of melt processin
g (extrusion or cast molding). Use of the extrusion technologies marke
dly reduces the cost of the scintillator. The attenuation length with
respect to the intrinsic emission is about 30 cm, which is quite satis
factory for using the new scintillator in wide-aperture hodoscope dete
ctors and cell calorimeters with WLS or optical-fiber readout.
