The authors report a hospital intestinal, salmonellosis outbreak which
occurred in 1996. 72 people were affected, including patients and hea
lth care workers. During this outbreak, a first peak could not be comp
letely investigated and was followed by a second peak when the contami
nated food was given again. S. enterica ser. Heidelberg and S. enteric
a ser. Manhattan were isolated from patient stool samples, The case co
ntrol survey indicated asparagus or bacon as contamination source. Mic
robiological analysis of food confirmed bacon contamination, probably
consecutive to insufficient pickling.
