Abstract
Objective. Chatter marks on temper-rolled steel strips lead to high co sts as a result of customer complaints or due to the strips having to be downgraded qualitatively and the back-up rolls additionally ground. A system was therefore to be developed which possibly avoids chatter marks on the strip. Summary. The chatter marks were first of all defin ed metrologically. They occur as a consequence of bending vibrations o f the work and back-up rolls. A new vibration monitoring and automatic speed control system has been installed at the temper mill of Voest-A lpine Stahl Lint GmbH, thereby making it possible to significantly red uce the occurrence of chatter marks. The system is specially tailored to this temper mill, but can be used for any single-and multi-stand st eel or aluminium cold rolling mill where there are undesired chatter m ark related vibrations.
