P. Reinhold et al., DESIRABILITY OF USING PROPOFOL AS A NARCO TIC AND AS A SHORT-TERM HYPNOTIC IN CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN 3 YEARS, Anasthesist, 47(3), 1998, pp. 229-237
Since its introduction in clinical use more than ten years ago, propof
ol is well appreciated for sedation and supplemental hypnosis in anaes
thesia. However the substance is approved only for anaesthesia in chil
dren elder than three years. As can be substantiated by many data repo
rted in literature, there are no pharmacokinetic or pharmacodynamic re
asons whatsoever to withhold propofol from the younger children; this
applies both to the use as a narcotic supplement and as a short term h
ypnotic for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.
