The process industries comprise the largest UK manufacturing sector, a nd include chemicals, pharmaceuticals, minerals and food. Process cont rol is a critical component of their success, but its application has been variable. In the future the process industries will need to becom e even more competitive driven by global competition. Jointly exploiti ng process and control will intimately change the nature of the indust ry to meet the changing market needs.
