A number of amino acid porphyrins and their zinc complexes were synthe
sized and characterized. Only the zinc porphyrin dimer containing a ch
iral amino acid bridge o,o-C-2-AA-C-2-(TPP)(2)Zn-2 showed significant
induced circular dichroism (ICD). The observed ICD of the present syst
em has been proposed to arise from chiral exciton coupling interaction
between two zinc porphyrins of the dimer. Our CD experimental results
also indicated that the obvious Soret band ICD of porphyrin does not
seem to be caused by a porphyrin-aromatic group coupled-oscillator int
eraction or a porphyrin-carbonyl coupling mechanism. (C) 1998 Elsevier
