State-of-the-art data communication systems make extensive use of digi
tal hardware. Besides baseband modulation functions, also the frequenc
y tuning functions are now being shifted from analog to digital implem
entation. Integration, cost and ease of programming are the primary mo
tivations for doing this. This paper presents an alternative to the tr
aditional digital frequency conversion architectures. The proposed arc
hitecture achieves low power as well as high speed operation, and achi
eves this dual goal by reducing programmability. A multi-rate filterin
g approach is used, which is applicable for both upconversion and down
conversion of quadrature modulated data.
