The existence of a critical state in a lyotropic liquid crystal has be
en recently predicted, induced by a magnetic field and corresponding t
o a uniform orientation parallel to the magnetic field, but not revers
ible. In this paper we report the observation of two critical states,
differing by the final orientation with respect to the magnetic field.
We discuss the surface interaction that could explain the experimenta
l results.
