Abstract
We investigate the relation between the thermodynamic stability of per iodic and quasiperiodic crystals and the characteristics of the intera ction potential within a simple van der Waals approximation to the fre e energy of a one-component two-dimensional system We find that thermo dynamically stable quasiperiodic crystals can be found only when the i nteraction potential has at least two negative minima separated by a p ositive maximum.
