The environment around Li in a LiAlSiO4 glass has been studied by neut
ron scattering with isotopic substitution of Li and reverse Monte Carl
o modeling. Li atoms are found in distorted tetrahedral sites which ar
e edge-linked with (Si,Al)O-4 tetrahedra and with a first Li-Li distan
ce near 5 Angstrom. The increase in the activation energy for ionic co
nduction from the aluminosilicate to the silicate glasses is explained
by the structural differences.
