We present a magnetic structural refinement using resonant magnetic x-
ray scattering to investigate the antiferromagnetic structure of singl
e-crystal elemental neodymium at 10 K. By comparison with neutron-diff
raction results, we show that x rays can be used for refinement of com
plex magnetic structures. However, unlike neutrons, x rays distinguish
between the magnetic responses of the two different Nd sites in the c
rystal structure. Our fits to the observed intensities are significant
ly improved by the inclusion of a scattering vector-dependent term rem
iniscent of a form factor. The theoretical issues underlying our obser
vations are discussed.
