Fc. Voogt et al., SUPERPARAMAGNETIC BEHAVIOR OF STRUCTURAL DOMAINS IN EPITAXIAL ULTRATHIN MAGNETITE FILMS, Physical review. B, Condensed matter, 57(14), 1998, pp. 8107-8110
We provide evidence that thin films of magnetite Fe3O4 epitaxially gro
wn on single-crystalline MgO(100), form domains with unique magnetic p
roperties. Strong 180 degrees Fe-O-Fe superexchange paths at antiphase
domain boundaries result in a frustration of the interdomain interact
ions. Probe-layer Mossbauer spectroscopy shows superparamagnetic behav
ior in the entire film, in spite of the nearly perfect layer-by-layer
growth. Superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry is us
ed to determine the temperature and thickness dependence of the superp
aramagnetic blocking temperatures.
