Revista Medica de Chile adds a well-deserved tribute to Professor Juli
o R Meneghello, to whom the Chilean Government awarded the 1996 Nation
al Prize in Applied and Technological Sciences. Dr Meneghello is a dis
tinguished pediatrician who devoted his professional life to academic
and public institutions, envisioning a unifying concept of Pediatrics
as a clinical, biological and social specialty. He has set up a school
extended to several Latinamerican countries, where a vast number of d
isciples fight the deletereous effects of poverty, ignorance, undernut
rition and infections, on childhood growth and development. Several in
ternational Health Organizations, universities and governmental instit
utions from Europe and the Americas have praised the positive and exem
plary effect of Professor Meneghello's work in the progress of public
health and medical education, mainly in Third World countries. The Rev
ista is pleased to publish a special article written by one of his ill
ustrious friends, Professor Luis Vargas-Fernandez, also National Prize
of Sciences(1985).
