The Ti-Ni-N phase diagram has been thermodynamically assessed, and a c
onsistent set of thermodynamic functions has been developed. An extend
ed ternary solubility of nitrogen in Ti2Ni and the ternary interaction
in liquid phase have been modeled. The solid ternary solution phases
were extrapolated from the thermodynamic descriptions of the binary bo
undary systems, The experimental phase equilibria at 1100 and 900 degr
ees C have been well reproduced. The thermodynamic description of the
Ti-Ni-N system has been applied to study the conditions for the format
ion of nitride inclusion in nickel alloys containing titanium, the nit
ridation of Ni-Ti alloys, and the denitrification, phase formation, an
d vaporization during the sintering of the TiN-Ni mixed powder compact
