Molybdenum sulphide thin films were cathodically electrodeposited from
aqueous solutions of sodium tetrathiomolybdate on quartz substrate co
vered by a thin Ni-Cr layer. Annealing of these films in sulphur conta
ining atmosphere at high-temperature resulted in the formation of high
ly-textured films of MoS2 with the van der Waals planes parallel to th
e substrate and crystal size in the micrometer range. The annealed fil
ms are photoactive and their photoconductivity measurements reveal a d
irect band gap of about 1.71 eV. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All ri
