Investigations of the luminescence properties of LiSr2Y1-xEuxO4, LiSr2
Y1-xTbxO4 and LiSr2Y1-xTmxO4 (0 less than or equal to x less than or e
qual to 1) at room temperature are reported. These samples were synthe
sized by a solid state reaction. The excitation spectra of Tb1+ emissi
on in LiSr2Y1-xTb1O4 (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to
1) consist of broad bands corresponding to a transition between the 4f
(8) and 4f(7)5d(1) states of Tb3+. The maximum intensity is situated a
t about 318 nm. This is at a much longer wavelength than those of othe
r Tb3+ doped phosphors. This is explained bq a large offset of the adi
abatic potential curve of the 4f(7)5d(1) state. (C) 1998 Elsevier Scie
