Abstract
This article provides an overview of the work undertaken in the ACTS R AINBOW project to develop a flexible radio-independent architecture fo r UMTS, which will support both existing second-generation radio acces s and new third-generation radio interface(s). The architecture is dev eloped by decomposing the system into transport-dependent, mobility-de pendent, and service-dependent components.
