Abstract
We report here the synthesis and magnetic properties of a nerv quatern ary magnetic borocarbide YbNiBC. The material forms in the LuNiBC-type structure with lattice parameters a = 3.503 Angstrom and c = 7.556 An gstrom. From magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements we find that YbNiBC orders magnetically at T-m similar to 4 K. As a refe rence material, we have also synthesized GdNiBC and find that it order s magnetically at similar to 14 which is consistent with an earlier re port. T-m of YbNiBC is anomalously higher than that expected on the ba sis of de Gennes scaling. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights re served.
