Monoclonal antibodies have been raised against Ama isolated from human
and experimental atherosclerotic plaque. I-131-Ama-MoAb in the whole
antibody form was injected into normal NZW rabbits and Watanabe hyperl
ipidemic rabbits. Biodistribution studies showed that atheromatous aor
tas hud a significantly higher (5-7X) uptake of I-131-Ama-MoAb than th
at of normal aortas. However. I-131-Ama-MoAb was cleared very slowly f
rom atherosclerotic rabbits. As a result, atheromas could not be ident
ified by imaging because of the low target to non-target ratios.
