This article argues that academic freedom is not absolute, hut is deli
mited by legal. bargained and social factors. Further, it is argued th
at academic freedom implies certain obligations on university faculty,
and in doing so recognizes the legitimate role of political correctne
ss in the modem university, Given these limitations, the article consi
ders some of the appropriate limits to political correctness, and argu
es that what are seeded are the proper place and procedure to debate t
he balance between academic privilege and responsibility.
