Abstract
Oxidative dimerisation of bis-acetylenic precursors in the presence of a dinaphtho-crown ether affords neutral [2]catenanes in good yields; the interaction of the complementary donor-acceptor pi-systems ensures assembly in a geometry favouring catenane formation.
