Lead lanthanum titanate (PLT) nanocrystalline powder prepared by the s
ol-gel process was incorporated into a polyvinylidene fluoride/trifluo
roethylene (P(VDF-TrEF)) copolymer matrix to form PLT/P(VDF-TrFE) nano
composites. The permittivities (epsilon) of the nanocomposites as a fu
nction of volume fraction of ceramic phi were modeled using the Brugge
man model. The pyroelectric coefficients (P) and figure of merit (p/ep
silon) were measured as functions of the poling field E. The nanocompo
site has P and P/epsilon values higher than those of the copolymer, an
d has good potential in pyroelectric applications.
