BACKGROUND. Compression therapy Will relieve patients of symptoms of v
enous disease, if not prevent the occurrence of complications, and is
used either alone or in combination with other treatment options. OBJE
CTIVE. TO describe the use of compression in the two main therapy moda
lities: sclerocompression and ambulatory phlebectomy. METHODS. Aim and
mechanism of compression therapy are analyzed and clinical implicatio
ns are discussed. RESULTS. A modification of compression therapy after
ambulatory phlebectomy is suggested based on empirical evidence. CONC
LUSIONS. The use of broad compression pads after ambulatory phlebectom
y reduces hemorrhage and enhances resorption. (C) 1998 by the American
