Vm. Barragan et C. Ruizbauza, STREAMING POTENTIAL AND HYDRAULIC PERMEATION THROUGH CATION-EXCHANGE MEMBRANES, Journal of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, 22(4), 1997, pp. 374-385
The streaming potential and the hydraulic permeation were obtained, un
der different experimental conditions, for a cation-exchange membrane.
From the measurements we have determined the phenomenological coeffic
ients, L-ij, that enter the equations describing electrokinetic phenom
ena according to the Thermodynamics of Irreversible Processes. The res
ults obtained for the streaming potential are correlated to the result
s obtained for electroosmosis, under the same experimental conditions,
in a previous paper. It permits us to state that Onsager's reciprocit
y relation holds up to 10(-1) mol/liter KCl concentration. The effecti
ve fixed charge concentration was estimated from the results of the st
reaming potential, hydraulic permeation and resistance of the membrane
.
