Volatile products present in poly(vinyl chloride), PVC, after outdoor
weathering have been compared with volatiles from laboratory, UV expos
ed PVC surfaces. Compounds both present in the photodegraded polymer s
urface layer and directly emitted from the polymer were measured in th
e laboratory experiments. The hydrocarbons, oxygenated compounds and c
hloro-organic species were measured and identified by capillary gas ch
romatography with a mass spectrometer detector.
