An induction period (IP), one of the important kinetic parameters of s
elf-accelerating processes, was considered for the class of chain reac
tions. The definition of IP was formulated, and other definitions of I
P available in the literature were critically analyzed. The functional
relation between IP and kinetic parameters of main steps of chain pro
cesses was revealed. The agreement between the analytical expression o
btained and the numerical solution of a system of kinetic equations an
d experimental data was verified. The examples of using TP for reveali
ng specific features of reaction mechanisms and determining rate const
ants were presented.
