We analyze a coupled map lattice system with spatially inhomogeneous,
asymmetrical couplings. Depending on the form and the strength of the
spatially distributed couplings, the system exhibits stationary and os
cillatory zigzag patterns, spatial coherence of temporally periodic an
d chaotic orbits, and spatially confined spatiotemporal chaos. For cer
tain values of the system parameters, the coherent state is found to b
e very sensitive to the initial conditions. By varying the coupling st
rength and the asymmetry constant, phase transitions among different s
