Js. Krause et al., LOCUS OF CONTROL AND LIFE ADJUSTMENT - RELATIONSHIP AMONG PEOPLE WITHSPINAL-CORD INJURY, Rehabilitation counseling bulletin, 41(3), 1998, pp. 162-172
The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of life adj
ustment after spinal cord injury (SCI) with 3 components of locus of c
ontrol (LOC): internality, chance, and powerful others. Of the 127 par
ticipants, those who were older at injury, had fewer years of educatio
n, or were from minority backgrounds reported less favorable LOC score
s. Locus of control was correlated with several aspects of life adjust
ment: Internality was positively correlated with subjective well-being
, and powerful others was negatively correlated with health indicators
. Rehabilitation counseling will be enhanced by using LOC to predict r
isk for adverse outcomes.
