The changes in psychoanalytic self psychology since its origination by
Heinz Kohut are described as difference in three branches: the tradit
ional, the intersubjective, and the relational. Each claims both a dis
tinctiveness and a major influence within self psychology. These are d
escribed and contrasted. It is suggested that an effort to integrate a
ll three is premature, and that they will continue to grow separately.
