E. Melcher et Rd. Peek, THE PRODUCTION OF WOOD PRESERVATIVES AND THE REGISTRATION OF IMPREGNATION PLANTS IN THE FORMER GDR, Holz als Roh- und Werkstoff, 56(2), 1998, pp. 97-101
In order to record the production of wood preservatives and the locati
on of impregnation plants in the former GDR, documents of the Office f
or Standardisation, Measuring Affairs, and Products Testing (Amt fur S
tandardisierung, Messwesen und Warenprufung, ASMW) were evaluated. Dur
ing the period of 1970-1988 annually app. 15.000 t of wood preservativ
es were produced, thereof 1/3 water soluble salts and 2/3 oilbased pro
ducts. The records revealed that environmentally relevant substances s
uch as arsenate and pentachlorophenol (PCP) were used in the former GD
R. The present situation of impregnation plants involves special probl
ems, as the majority of the recorded vacuum pressure-and dipping devic
es showed a desolate condition since in the time of GDR. Corresponding
investigations at the different locations will show to what extent re
medial measures are necessary.
