Ar. Messina et al., AN INVESTIGATION ON THE USE OF POWER-SYSTEM STABILIZERS FOR DAMPING INTER-AREA OSCILLATIONS IN LONGITUDINAL POWER-SYSTEM, IEEE transactions on power systems, 13(2), 1998, pp. 552-558
This paper presents the progress of an investigation on the use of Pow
er System Stabilizers (PSSs) to enhance damping of low-frequency inter
-area modes in longitudinal power systems, a dynamic model of the Mexi
can Interconnected System (MIS) is adopted to evaluate the potential f
or small signal stability improvement by means of PSSs. Power oscillat
ion flow studies, transfer function residues and controllability and o
bservability characteristics are used to understand the nature of osci
llation patterns, mode identification and PSSs siting. It is shown tha
t PSSs can significantly enhance damping of modal oscillations, especi
ally under high stress conditions.
