The coversion of the existing analogue telecommunications and TV netwo
rks into digital information networks is a worldwide trend. Digital tr
ansmission technologies have resulted in significant increases in capa
city, improvements in performance as well as an increase in the variet
y of services that are offered over the network. This article looks at
the satellite component of such a network, particularly telephony thr
ough INSAT, in an attempt to assess the impact of going digital for ru
ral telecom applications.
