Abstract
Selective gene transcription is mediated in part by regulatory protein s that bind to DNA response elements. These regulatory proteins receiv e global information from signal-transduction events. But transcriptio nal regulators may also be modified in an allosteric manner by respons e elements themselves to generate the pattern of regulation that is ap propriate to an individual gene.
