The translational and internal energies of CO desorbed by electron imp
act From well-ordered root 3x root 3 layers on Ru(001) are investigate
d with time-of-flight techniques and resonance enhanced multiphoton io
nization (REMPI) spectroscopy. We discriminate four desorption channel
s with different translational and internal energy distributions. Tran
slational and vibrational energies are positively, correlated: rotatio
nal and vibrational-translational energies are negatively correlated.
The microscopic origins of these correlations are discussed. (C) 1998
