Increasing numbers of elderly people are being treated in hospitals an
d are at particular risk of acquiring infections. The incidence, risk
factors and types of hospital-acquired infection (HAI) in the elderly
are reviewed. Special reference is made to urinary tract infections, r
espiratory tract infections, gastrointestinal infections including Clo
stridium difficile, bacteraemia, skin and soft tissue infections and i
nfections with antibiotic-resistant organisms.
