Abstract
Based on the analysis of microscopic equations for the dynamics of a h ydrogen-containing ferroelectric and a phenomenological equation descr ibing the photorefractive eff;ect, we derive a set of effective equati ons for the dynamics of the forward and backward electromagnetic waves propagating in a ferroelectric. The derived equations are analyzed fo r a forward wave with Gaussian and soliton-like envelopes. The mechani sm behind the appearance of the backward wave is revealed. The conditi ons when the backward wave loses its stability are determined.
