We determine the rate constants of collisional predissociation for vib
rational levels of the B state in molecular iodine (v' = 6, 11 for I-1
27(2) and v' = 6, 8, 12 for I-129(2)) excited by 633-nm radiation of a
He-Ne laser. As a buffer, we employed various gases with different ph
ysical and chemical properties, including He, Ne, Ar, Xe, H2O, O-2, N-
2, NO, NO2, CO2, and HNO3. It is demonstrated that, for nonpolar monoa
tomic buffer gases, predissociation rate constants are proportional to
the polarizability of the buffer gas. For polyatomic polar molecules,
predissociation rate constants increase with the growth in the total
dipole moment of the buffer gas, consisting of the intrinsic dipole mo
ment and the dipole moment induced by the interaction with an iodine m
olecule. The rate of collisional predissociation for the same buffer g
as increases with the growth in the number of a vibrational level.
