S. Hongeng et al., RECURRENT STREPTOCOCCUS-PNEUMONIAE SEPSIS IN CHILDREN WITH SICKLE-CELL DISEASE, The Journal of pediatrics, 130(5), 1997, pp. 814-816
Streptococcus pneumoniae sepsis is the most common invasive infection
among patients with sickle cell disease. The risk of a recurrent episo
de of sepsis and subsequent death in those patients who have had a pre
vious septic event is much higher. Patients with sickle disease who ha
ve had pneumococcal sepsis should continue penicillin prophylaxis inde
finitely and should not be candidates for out-patient patient manageme
nt of febrile episodes.
