The pyrolysis of triphenyl (diphenoxyphosphinyl)phosphorimidate (1) wa
s investigated using differential thermal analysis-thermogravimetry (D
TA-TG), thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (TG-MS), infrared spectrosc
opy (IR), mass spectrometry (MS), high performance liquid chromatograp
hy (HPLC) and the P-31 nuclear magnetic resonance method (P-31 NMR). T
he cleavage of 1 by electron impact (EI) was also investigated, the re
sults were used to elucidate the pyrolysis process. Compound 1 decompo
sed on heating to form phenol, triphenyl phosphate, hexaphenoxycyclotr
iphosphazene, octaphenoxycyclotetraphosphazene, triphenyl sphinyl)-P,P
-diphenoxyphosphinimyl]phosphorimidate and longer-chain phosphazene co
mpound (PhO)(2)P(O)N=P(OPh)(2)N=P(OPh)(2)N=P(OPh)(3). In mass spectrom
etric analysis, 1 was cleaved by the elimination of a phenoxyl radical
, similar to pyrolysis, the formation of the ion assigned to triphenyl
phosphate was observed. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights res
