Abstract
A previously undiscovered lyssavirus has been identified in fruit bats in Australia. Although close to classical rabies virus, antigenically and genetically, the Australian bat lyssavirus represents a new genot ype. It causes central nervous system pathology in bats and has caused the death of one woman.
