The author presents a historical analysis of people versus the politic
al economy. since the dawn of civilisation, through the great industri
al revolution and colonisation, upto contemporary globalisation. He id
entifies three broad situations at present: the world of victors, the
world of the vanquished and the intermediate zone. He identifies two g
enres of people's reactions to the malfunctioning of the system: viole
nt revolts against the state and resistance of the infolding of the lo
gic of the system and the imperial paradigm. According to him, the mov
ement of village self-governance in the tribal areas has the potential
of graduating into a pan-Indian people's movement which may force the
ruling elite for a basic structural transformation.
