It is shown that the technique of Particle Image Velocimetry can be us
ed to measure the acoustic particle velocity in a monotonic sound fiel
d. The mathematical forms for the power spectrum and autocorrelation f
unctions of the image formed on film by a sinusoidally oscillating see
ding particle are derived. An experiment involving a standing wave in
a tube was set up, and the method used to measure the acoustic particl
e velocity along the tube. This was compared to the form expected from
theory, and the measured results were found to agree to within experi
mental error.
