The quest for athletic perfection continues to promote the production
of so-called ergogenic aids. This article reviews some of the most pop
ular compounds, their benefits and pitfalls, and cautions against acce
pting the often unproven claims made by the producers of such suppleme
nts. It is stressed that insufficient testing and yet unknown long-ter
m effects are of major concern. The author points out that although ce
rtain legal supplements may actually be of added benefit to some athle
tes, true athletic success continues to stem primarily from genetic en
dowment, hard work, dedicated training, and proper nutrition.
