A new species of cichlid fish in the genus Lamprologus is described fr
om Lake Tanganyika, Zambia. Lamprologus laparogramma sp. n. is sexuall
y dimorphic and dichromatic and can be distinguished from other Lampro
logus by the following characters: 14-15 dorsal fin spines; 5-6 anal f
in spines; 4-6 rakers along the lower limb of the first gill arch; upp
er outer ring of the eye blue; 5-9 straight vertical lines on the bell
y-lower flank; (in males) from 0-8 vertical braided bars on the poster
ior flank and caudal peduncle; (in females) a yellow belly. Lamprologu
s signatus Poll 1952(1) and L. kungweensis Poll 1956(2) are rediagnose
d on the basis of male and female specimens. The geographical range of
L. signatus is extended. The three species are hole-dwellers and are
found in sub-littoral mud substrate habitats. Each species was observe
d in their natural habitat using SCUBA. Aspects of their ecology and b
ehaviour are recorded and their taxonomy is discussed.
