Abstract
The Gonorynchiformes, a small group of teleost fishes, are of particul ar interest because they are the sister-group of ostariophysans, the l argest group of freshwater fishes, Here we review gill-arch structure in Recent gonorynchiforms and describe a remarkable range of modificat ions, providing an array of characters bearing on interrelationships w ithin the group.
